‘2020 Leaders’ participate in workshops on volunteering in international sporting events

DUBAI, 19th July, 2018 (WAM) — Forty students from the UAE school participated in two specialist workshops on volunteering in national and international sporting events, at the headquarters of the Government of Tokyo.

The workshops took place during the third edition of the “2020 Leaders Programme,” which was launched by the Ministry of Education and the Watani Al Emarat Foundation, under the umbrella of the “Our Ambassadors 2018 Programme” that was organised by OPIC Consulting and Training, in cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Centre, JICE, and under the patronage of the “Secretary’s Service.”

Both workshops addressed the concepts of volunteering in sports and major international sporting events, as well as the responsibilities of the youth in supporting national events organised by their countries.

Lian Chin, President of the Volunteer Centre of the Tokyo Marathon, which is one of the leading marathons in the world, explained the role of volunteers before, during and after sporting events, as well as their importance to guaranteeing the success of sporting events while stressing that caring about details, no matter how small or big, is the best way to ensure the happiness of fans and competitors.

Takayoshi Shimodi, Director of the Volunteers Department of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 Organising Committee, highlighted the general vision of the 2020 Olympics, as well as the role of volunteers during the event and its side activities.

Shimodi expressed his happiness at the UAE’s efforts to prepare young leaders for the Expo 2020 Dubai, as well as to encourage the UAE’s youth to advance their nation through volunteering.

The “2020 Leaders” are visiting Japan to learn about its experience in advancing and developing its economy, as well as to improve the capacities of its people, which it considers as its most important resource and the key factor in developing all sectors.

The programme aims to prepare and train coming generations who can lead the future, especially as the UAE is preparing to host the Expo 2020 Dubai.
