Another political killing rocks Kerala

Murder of Youth League and Muslim Students Federation activist comes as House discusses Shuhaib death

Thiruvananthapuram: Another political murder in Kerala’s Malabar region has rocked the political fraternity in Kerala, even as the state assembly on Monday witnessed uproarious scenes while discussing the murder of Youth Congress leader, S.P. Shuhaib, who was murdered earlier this month.

S. Safeer, 23, a member of the Youth League and Muslim Students Federation, arms of the Indian Union Muslim League, was murdered on Sunday night at Mannarkad in what is being seen as another political murder.

Senior Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran said the murder of Safeer, which comes close on the heels of the murder of Congress leader Shuhaib, “points to a failure of the law and order machinery in the state”.

Police in Mannarkad have taken into custody five people in connection with Safeer’s death.

The Left Democratic Front government, meanwhile, faced Opposition fury in the state assembly over the murder of Shuhaib. When the House speaker turned down the Opposition demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the murder, the Opposition staged a walkout.

Congress leaders are alleging that Shuhaib was hacked to death by Communist Party of India Marxist workers, but the claim has been denied by the CPM leadership.

Opposition MLAs came to the House on Monday carrying placards demanding a CBI investigation into Shuhaib’s death. They also raised the issues of the murder of Safeer, and also the murder of a tribal youth, Madhu, 27 by a mob in Attapady, accusing him of stealing food from a shop.

Uproarious scenes were witnessed as Opposition MLAs moved towards the speaker’s dais, waved the placards and banners and staged a sit-in protest in the well of the House. Media persons were then stopped from capturing visuals of the developments inside the assembly.

Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan turned down the demand for a CBI investigation, and said the state police would conduct a neutral investigation into the Shuhaib murder case.
