Consulate warns Emiratis over rare US thundersnow

Dubai: The UAE Consulate in Boston has issued a warning to residents living or travelling to the US, after Winter Storm Quinn slammed various parts of the East Coast.

Citizens were also advised to follow safety precautions as snow dumped across a number of major cities, including New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia.

On its official social networking sites, the UAE consulate said that it has issued a winter storm warning that will remain in effect until March 8.

“For UAE citizens, please be safe and cautious and follow the local news for weather updates. In case of emergency, call 911 or [the Twajudi service] +971 800 44444,” it said.

Storm Quinn is the second nor’easter to hit the region within a week, according to the Weather Channel, and brought delays to flights, ferry routes and bus services on Wednesday afternoon.

The weather brought subfreezing temperatures along the eastern coast, which unleashed a thudersnow – a rare phenomenon caused when lightning occurs within snow storms.
