ABU DHABI, 29th April, 2019 (WAM) — The Delegation of the European Union to the UAE organised several activities at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi in celebration of ‘Europe Day’ in collaboration with Zayed University, under the patronage of Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance.
Around 200 people attended the event including government officials, the faculty and students from both universities, ambassadors and deputies of 19 European Union Member States, representatives from the different media outlets in the country, as well as members of the EU Delegation.
Speaking on the occasion, Sheikh Nahyan said, “The European Union is, and will continue to be a strong, cooperative, and reliable partner to the UAE. We stand for multilateralism, for human rights, and for international cooperation. We work at home and abroad to promote sustainable development, inclusive societies, and the fight against inequality and discrimination of any type.
“Our goal is to make Europe closer to the UAE and the UAE even closer to Europe,” he added.
“Tolerance and coexistence are two of the main values that symbolise Zayed University. Such principles are reflected in the students’ daily interaction with international faculty members, coming from over 60 countries. We are fully committed to providing our students with a high-quality education that keeps pace with international best practices,” Reyadh Almehaideb, Vice-President of Zayed University, noted.
He added, “The exposure to different cultures and backgrounds is key to brighten the young minds to become future leaders’ capable of intermingling and networking with their future international counterparts.”
For the first time in the Middle East, queen of melodic whistling, Elena Somare’ and the remarkable pianist Gianluca Massetti came to the UAE, especially for this occasion. This is the first time the musical couple perform in the Middle East. Several Western and Eastern pieces including ones by Bocelli, Rossini and The Beatles, were in the programme.
