GEMS to open four new UAE schools in new academic year

Two British schools in Dubai, an IB-candidate school in Abu Dhabi, and an Indian school in Sharjah to be launched in 2018/19

GEMS Education has announced the opening of four new schools in the UAE for the 2018/2019 academic year, which begins in September for most schools.

GEMS Vertus School and GEMS Founders School-Mizhar will open in Dubai, while an international curriculum school will open on Al Reem Island in Abu Dhabi, and an Indian curriculum GEMS school will open in Sharjah.

Dino Varkey, CEO of GEMS Education, said: “Our expansion plans are in direct response to the increased demands for high quality education in the UAE. These additional schools and campuses will provide even more families with the opportunity to access great value for money schools.”

GEMS Vertus School will be located in the Al Waha region of Dubai, and will offer the National Curriculum for England. Initially open to students from Foundation Stage to Year 8, with fees from Dh34,000 to Dh42,500, the school will be led by John Hughes, who was most recently vice-principal of GEMS Metropole School.

GEMS Founders School-Mizhar will be located in Al Mizhar near Midriff, and is modelled after GEMS Founders School in Al Barsha. Nigel Cropley, most recently principal of GEMS Winchester School-Abu Dhabi, will lead the school, which will offer the National Curriculum for England to students from Foundation Stage to Year 8, with fees ranging from Dh22,000 to Dh29,000. The school will add grades over the years.

Built on the 50 years of service from its Our Own English High Schools, GEMS Education will open a new school in the Juwaiza’a area of Sharjah. Open initially to students from kindergarten to Grade 5, the Indian-curriculum school will have growth in the older grades. Michael Guzder, vice-president for Indian Schools at GEMS Education, will support the school, which will be led by Principal Sangita Chima. Sangita has over 30 years of experience in education and joins the new school from The Lawrence School-Lovedale in Ooty, India.

In Abu Dhabi, GEMS Education will open a new international curriculum school on Al Reem Island. This new IB-candidate school will cater to students from kindergarten to Year 5. GEMS Education said it hopes to add more to this list in the coming weeks.
