GWU launches ‘Emirati Women’s Encyclopaedia’

ABU DHABI, 24th April, 2018 (WAM) — As part of the directives of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, GWU, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, FDF, the GWU today launched the ‘Emirati Women’s Encyclopaedia’, with the aim of creating a spirit of competitiveness among government authorities to achieve the nation’s strategic goals to empower women, as well as to participate in enriching the encyclopaedia’s content.

In a statement, Sheikha Fatima said that Emirati women have accomplished many achievements and successes, under the framework of the approach of the wise leadership while pointing out that women’s issues have gained the attention of the community, through the drafting of strategies that aim to empower women.

She added that the launch of the encyclopaedia by the GWU is an essential step in supporting the monitoring of the combined efforts of public and private institutions, as well as civil society organisations, to achieve the national strategy that aims to empower Emirati women, highlight their role and develop their capacities.

The encyclopaedia also aims to promote cooperation and integration between government authorities and the private sector in women’s empowerment while presenting the achievements of Emirati women and the contributions of relevant institutions and bodies.

Sheikha Fatima expressed her hope that the encyclopaedia will achieve its goals and help reinforce the leading role of Emirati women in various areas, to makes them active partners in the country’s sustainable development programmes and plans.

In his statement, H.H. Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, said that the progress of Emirati women had made a difference in the region, due to the ongoing support and leading initiatives of Sheikha Fatima, the “Mother of the UAE.”

He stressed that the encyclopaedia constitutes a national archive and database of documented information, which showcase the achievements of Emirati women and their role in the country’s development while adding that the encyclopaedia will help to highlight the benefits of empowering women and implementing a relevant national strategy.

Noura Khalifa Al Suwaidi, Secretary-General of the GWU, said that the launch of the encyclopaedia is the outcome of the country’s efforts, led by Sheikha Fatima, to help women attain leading positions and empower them in all areas.

She added that the GWU is keen to launch the encyclopaedia in line with the government’s call to all national authorities and institutions to transform their services to smart services, and the encyclopaedia is the first e-reference on information about Emirati women.

Sheikha Fatima launched the “National Strategy for the Empowerment of Emirati Women in the UAE 2015-2021,” to provide a general reference for all public, private and civil society institutions for drafting plans and programmes that aim to provide women with a decent life and enable them to participate in the country’s sustainable development.
