Hamdan bin Mohammed crowns winner of Global Teacher Prize

DUBAI, 24th March, 2019 (WAM) — H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, crowned today Peter Tabichi, a Math and Physics teacher from Kenya, with the award of the best teacher in the world.

Tabichi, won the prize money award of of $1 million in a ceremony that took place on Sunday at Atlantis, The Palm.

Global Teacher Prize gala is an annual star-studded event in the UAE, where one outstanding educator is awarded $1 million (Dh3.7 million) for extraordinary work in their field.

The annual award by the Varkey Foundation honours teachers who have contributed immensely to their community, despite the many obstacles that stand in their way.

Last year’s $1m award was bagged by UK arts and textiles teacher, Andria Zafirakou, who went out of her way to help students who come from the poorest families in Britain.

This year’s finalists are from India, Australia, the US, Kenya, Netherlands, Brazil, Japan, Argentina, the UK and Georgia. They were selected from over 10,000 nominations and applications from 179 countries around the world.

The ceremony was held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, in the presence of Dr. Ahmad bin Abdullah Humaid Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of State for Higher Education and Advanced Skills, Sarah bint Yousif Al Amiri, Minister of State for Advanced Sciences, and a number of Arab and foreign officials along with education dignitaries.
