Position Purpose
Ensures that there is effective function of the organizational Infection Control Service through consultation, staff education, quality improvement, outbreak investigation, policy development and implementation.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
- Prevention, investigation, monitoring and reporting of the spread of diseases in hospitals
- Works with staffs in the clinical setting to identify patient care requirements in relation to infection prevention and control.
- Ensures the development, implementation and evaluation of relevant standards of practice based on infection prevention and control guidelines.
- Provides information, if requested, to patients, relatives or community consumers on infection prevention and control needs.
- Ensures policies and practices are in place to safeguard patients from cross infection.
- Provides direction on issues relating to infection prevention and control, whilst demonstrating knowledge and commitment to patient’s rights and responsibilities in the healthcare setting.
- Liaises with the employee health clinic to provide effective prevention program for communicable disease.
- Monitors waste management system, procedure and policy to ensure its effectiveness and safety.
- Provides effective communication and awareness in promotion of medical asepsis and oversees proper techniques against transmission of infection within the hospital.
- Monitor individual compliance with existing infection prevention and control policy, criteria or regulations.
- Notifies communicable disease statistics to Ministry of Health on weekly and monthly basis and in cases of certain infections like TB, HIV and cholera; epidemics on daily basis according to the policy.
- Ensures isolation precautions are implemented and maintained by responsible healthcare worker.
- Provides consulting role to healthcare workers in matters related to infection prevention and control.
- Performs rounds to all patient care and non-patient care areas for case findings and supervision of environmental factors.
- Introduces all necessary measures to prevent the spread of infection or organism highly resistant to antibiotics.
- Collaborates with other members of Outbreak control team in investigating epidemic of infections
- Participates in mentoring of staff.
- Implements and monitors quality improvement programs and activities.
- Assumes responsibility for his/ her own decisions and actions.
- Develops and utilizes collegial networking.
- Demonstrates respect, compassion, and cultural sensitivity to patients and their families.
- Respects patients and their families to promote a patient-centered care culture.
- Participates in and supports quality improvement and patient safety activities as an individual or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Perform other job related duties as required.
Qualification and Experience
Education and Professional Certifications/Licenses
- Bachelor in Nursing or other relevant Allied Health Science.
- Diploma in Infection Control or Infection Control Training Course for minimum of 6 months.
- SCFHS license.
