ABU DHABI, 23rd December, 2017 (WAM) — In an editorial on Saturday, the Gulf New said that there is a combined generosity of spirit and deep sense of giving that is embedded in all those who live together in the UAE, one that has now manifested itself fully in the overwhelming response to the 2017 Year of Giving.

“On Wednesday, as the year-long campaign wrapped up, Mohammad bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, the UAE’s Minister of Cabinet Affairs and The Future and Chairman of the Higher National Committee for the Year of Giving, confirmed that it had concluded with a staggering 2.8 million volunteer hours logged by 270,000 volunteers. Even more impressive is the fact that the private sector across the UAE has together raised Dh1.6 billion for humanitarian causes and initiatives.

“These are not the easiest of times for companies at the moment as challenges arise that mean employers and employees alike must double down and refocus on the tasks at hand. But despite that, companies still set time, efforts and resources aside to ensure that they set and meet community service goals, working together to ensure the lives of many were, are and will be improved through the Year of Giving initiatives,” the Dubai-based daily added.

It went on to say, “On an international scale, the UAE has also been a generous giver of time, resources and financial support when natural calamities or conflicts arise. What this year-long initiative has done is to show that the private sector and those who work within it are equally predisposed to helping and assisting others in any way they can.”

“The sheer scale of the response has been highly impressive not only in monetary terms, that are relatively easy to quantify, but also in terms of the many volunteer hours readily contributed by so many dedicated to noble causes,” the English language daily concluded.
