Dubai: A man, who hugged and kissed a tourist against her will in a hotel’s lobby while she was using her laptop, has been sentenced to three months in jail.
The 31-year-old Omani man walked towards the woman, who was sitting on a sofa at the lobby and surfing the Internet, and asked to kiss her in July.
When the woman refused to give the Omani defendant a kiss, he hugged her against her will and planted a kiss on her mouth before she pushed him away and ran away.
On Tuesday, the Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the defendant in absentia after he failed to show up in court and enter his plea.
Presiding judge Mohammad Jamal said the accused will be deported following the completion of his punishment.
A polceiman testified that Dubai Police’s operation room were reported about a molestation case at the lobby of the hotel near Safa Park.
“A police patrol was dispatched to the hotel … we saw the woman and her mother waiting in the lobby. The tourist, who stayed in the same hotel, said while she was using her laptop, the defendant came to her and asked her for a hug. She claimed that once she refused, he hugged her against her will and then kissed her on her mouth. As she tried to push him away, he groped her … but then she pushed him and ran towards the reception. Upon examining the CCTV cameras, the defendant was shown sitting at one table as the woman sat on another table … then he stood up and walked towards her. He was then shown, as per the CCTV footages, hugging and kissing her against will,” he claimed.
The woman testified that the defendant asked her to hug him and accompany him to the meeting room.
The defendant, who was sentenced in absentia, is entitled a retrial.
