Abu Dhabi: The UAE Armed Forces on Wednesday organised a ceremony to mark the golden jubilee of the Naval Forces.
The ceremony kicked off upon the arrival of Lt-General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. Shaikh Saif, accompanied by Lt-General Hamad Mohammad Thani Al Rumaithi, Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces, and Rear Admiral Pilot Shaikh Saeed Bin Hamdan Bin Mohammad Al Nahyan, Commander of the UAE Naval Forces, launched the Abu Dhabi-class corvettes, produced by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri and added to the UAE Naval Forces fleet.
Shaikh Saif then toured the ships, and officially inaugurated the Ghantoot Naval Base, to coincide with the UAE Armed Forces Unification Day.
Addressing the gathering, Shaikh Saeed said the development witnessed by the UAE Armed Forces in general, and the Naval Forces in particular, was thanks to sound planning and the constant follow-up of the top brass.
He pointed out that the opening of the Ghantoot Naval Base is a significant achievement in the Naval Forces’ journey of development, operating alongside other naval bases to provide their units with the necessary backup.
Also present were Mohammad Ahmad Al Bawardi, Minister of State for Defence Affairs, senior military officials and members of diplomatic corps.
