Sheikha Fatima receives ‘Women, Security and Peace Summit’ delegation

ABU DHABI, 19th December, 2017 (WAM) — H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, GWU, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, FDF, received on Tuesday participants of the ‘Women, Security and Peace Summit: The Gender Dimensions of International Peace and Security’.

The summit, held under the patronage of Her Highness, was organised by the GWU, in cooperation with Trends Research and Advisory in Abu Dhabi, Women in International Security in Washington and the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, UN Women.

Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak welcomed the summit delegation, who through their participation, helped place a spotlight on women’s empowerment for peace and security, the gender dimensions of regional security challenges and the necessity of decreasing the gender gap.

Her Highness emphasised the importance of the event, as it allowed for discussions on women’s issues to take place. She added that the UAE, under the guidance of its leadership, has achieved gender balance, noting that Emirati women occupy multiple, high-ranking positions in the public and private sector, and undertake significant decision-making roles in various fields.

Sheikha Fatima expressed her happiness at the summit’s success, which brought together female experts, speakers and thought leaders in both local, regional and international arenas, adding that this group of individuals was a promising sight to witness and affirms that women taking up leadership roles in all sectors of life is advancing further.

She went on to say that the cooperation of the summit organisers reflects the UAE’s vested interest in the empowerment of women and the exchange of experiences with international bodies, noting the role the UAE in general, and the GWU in particular, have played in opening the UN Women liaison office for the Gulf Countries in Abu Dhabi.

The conference participants expressed their appreciation to Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak and her role in empowering UAE women in all fields, as well as supporting women throughout the world. They noted that the summit sessions confirmed that UAE women possess the elements of empowerment in all its forms, and exercise their rights to work, as equals, alongside their male counterparts.

The meeting was attended by Sheikha Sheikha bint Sorour, wife of Pilot Staff-Brigadier Sheikh Ahmed bin Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the National and Reserve Service Authority; Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation; Dr. Maitha bint Salem Al Shamsi, Minister of State; Noura Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GWU; Reem Al Falasi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Ambassador Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, UAE’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.
