ABU DHABI, 30th March, 2018 (WAM) — During two nights of world-class ballet performances, Spain’s national dance company, Compania Nacional de Danza, dazzled an Abu Dhabi Festival audience, in the presence of Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister for Tolerance, and Antonio Alvarez Barthe, Ambassador of Spain to the UAE, with a spellbinding performance of Don Quixote.
A vivid tale of imagination, friendship, love and loyalty, the ballet is based on the story by Miguel de Cervantes about the knight, Don Quixote.
Huda Alkhamis Kanoo, Founder of ADMAF and Artistic Director of the Abu Dhabi Festival, said, “The regional debut of this Spanish ballet production of Don Quixote is a magnificent example of ADMAF’s commitment to bringing world-class performances to the UAE. This interpretation by Spain’s Compania Nacional de Danza expresses the passion and poetry of Miguel de Cervantes’ infamous knight, Don Quixote. A dramatic and spectacular conclusion to this year’s festival, with a company that represents the very best of international dance.”
“Every year, the Abu Dhabi Festival is committed to presenting a programme of quality and depth while bringing the pinnacle of international cultural production to the UAE, across various disciplines and influences. Our true aim is to engage and inspire, by organising a calendar of events that reflect the cultural diversity of our audience. Our triumphant moments always come when we offer a crossroads between the East and West, by staging performances for UAE audiences that they cannot experience anywhere else. The 2018 festival was held with our desire to promote the values of tolerance, respect and enlightenment, qualities that were instilled throughout the nation by our founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. This final performance rounded off a full and varied programme of arts and culture while promoting tolerance, social intuition and openness, the ideal foundations of a society that develops eloquent and passionate future leaders,” he added.
The performance staged by Jose Carlos Martinez, Artistic Director of Compania Nacional de Danza, was a passionate take on the ballet that elegantly portrayed classical Franco-Russian choreography and reinvigorated the story with the essence of Cervantes and the company’s Spanish spirit, to create a poetic reflection of perfect love.
