Special Olympics World Games 2019 a ‘Flame of Hope’ in the ‘Home of Tolerance’

ABU DHABI, 26th February, 2019 (WAM) — The “Flame of Hope” will arrive at the Abu Dhabi International Airport from Athens in a matter of hours, beginning the countdown to the start of the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019.

The “Flame of Hope” is an Olympic symbol that embodies the values of the Olympic Movement, such as friendship and peace, and running with the flame carries valuable humanitarian meanings, by inviting all nationals and residents of the country to participate in the world’s leading humanitarian sporting event.

The Flame of Hope will land in the “Home of Tolerance” on 28th February, under the patronage of H.H. Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. It will tour various parts of the country from 4th to 13th March.

The flame’s journey will include visiting prominent cultural and tourism sites, including around 100 famous landmarks, and will carry the humanitarian meanings of the event, which will be held during the Year of Tolerance and will enable the UAE to present, to the entire world, its unique model of empowering and supporting people of determination.

Kholoud Saleh Al Marzouqi, First Director of Flame of Hope – the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019, said, “We are fully prepared to host the Flame of Hope, and its arrival is a key event that precedes the launch of the Special Olympics World Games. The flame will tour every emirate of the country.”

In special statements to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, Al Marzouqi stressed that the UAE’s hosting of Abu Dhabi 2019 during the Year of Tolerance embodies the values of tolerance, which are well-established in the country.

Abu Dhabi 2019, which will be held in the UAE from 14th to 21st March, is the largest humanitarian sporting event in the world. Its opening ceremony will be held at the Zayed Sports City Stadium on Thursday, 14th March, and will witness the participation of 40,000 spectators in the stadium and millions of spectators from around the world, who will cheer for 7,500 gifted athletes who are people of determination representing over 190 countries.
