AL AIN, 26th April, 2018 (WAM) — The Visitor Services Department at Al Jahili Fort in collaboration with the Zayed Higher Organisation for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs, yesterday organised a tour across Al Jahili fort’s exhibitions in Al Ain. The tour was aimed at raising awareness and celebrating the Arab Deaf Week initiative.
Arab Deaf Week celebrations at Al Jahili Fort invited students with special needs at the Zayed Higher Institute for Humanitarian Care on a tour to visit one of the oldest historic sites in the UAE. The students were taken on a tour with a guide using sign language.
The tour began by visiting the Square Fort and the Round Tower, and followed by a visit to the Trucial Scouts Exhibition, an exhibition which showcases a collection of 32 artefacts taken from the UAE military scouts, including some of the weapons they carried, uniforms and various other utensils.
The tour concluded with a visit to the renowned Mubarak bin London exhibition at Al Jahili Fort, which displays a series of black-and-white photographs documented by the British explorer Sir Wilfred Thesiger during his five-year visit to the Arabian Peninsula.
Arab Deaf Week was launched in 1976 at the Arab Federation of Deaf Organisation conference in Damascus, and each year during the last full week of April different activities and media events take place across Arab states to celebrate this significant initiative. Since the first event in 1976, the event has successfully raised public awareness on diverse issues including deafness prevention and ways of intervention, the rights of people with hearing loss, promotion of access to education, sign language education, and access to information technology and services.
