UAE Special Olympics Team participates with largest delegation in Special Olympics World Games

AL AIN, 6th March, 2019 (WAM) — The UAE’s Special Olympics team will be participating in the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 with 297 players and more than 70 trainers and managers to compete in 24 Olympic Games at the event which will be held in Abu Dhabi from 14th to 21st March, with 7,000 athletes and 3,000 coaches representing more than 190 countries.

“The team is ready to take part in this international tournament,” Suroor Saeed, Supervisor of the UAE Special Olympics Camp, told the Emirates News Agency, WAM, during its visit to the camp in Al Ain. He pointed out that the team began its camp since last February to intensify the exercise and rehabilitation of players to participate in this championship.

For their part, the coaches of the UAE Special Olympics team expressed their pride in participating in this important international forum, stressing the importance of the event in drawing a smile the faces of the participants in addition to developing their technical skills.

The members of the UAE Special Olympics team from the administrators, coaches to players thanked the leadership and all the officials of the Special Olympics for their support and for giving them the opportunity to represent the country.

Special Olympics UAE, SO UAE was founded in 1990. It was dedicated to serving athletes with intellectual disabilities through sports competitions. SO UAE provides year-round sports training and athletic competitions in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

This initiative enabled the UAE athletes to compete in the Special Olympics MENA Games and the upcoming World Games.

Since the 1990s, Special Olympics UAE has participated in twelve MENA and World Games and has more than 5,000 registered athletes and Unified partners, in addition to more than 300 coaches.

In 2017, UAE athletes competed in more than 70 events. Over the years, Special Olympics UAE has taken part in – and hosted – numerous significant events, internationally and regionally.
