Woman throws out kids before running train after dispute with husband

Angry villagers later caught hold of the woman and assaulted her badly, leaving her grieviously injured

Patna: A woman threw her two children under the wheels of a running train in Bihar following a minor dispute with her husband, leading to the death of one of them, witnesses said.

The heart-rending incident took place near Guraru railway station in Gaya district on Friday.

Witnesses said the woman carrying her two children aged six years and 18 months rushed near the station on Friday afternoon and threw both of them in front of a local express train.

Local villagers raised an alarm and asked the train driver to stop the train, but by the time the driver could apply emergency brakes, both the children had come under the wheels of the train.

Witnesses said when the train stopped, villagers immediately took out the children lying greviously injured on the tracks and rushed them to the local government medical college. However, the 18-month-old boy succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while the girl is battling for her life.

“We failed to save the boy despite all efforts. The condition of the other victim too is very serious,” Dr Mameshwar Mandal who treated the children told the media Friday.

Reports said the angry villagers later caught hold of the woman and assaulted her badly, leaving her grievously injured. She too has been admitted to a local hospital under police security.

The woman told police she tried to kill her children because her husband had been torturing her regularly and also not giving her money to run the family.

Suicides over family disputes have registered a sudden rise in Bihar in recent months. Earlier this month, a woman jumped into a well with her two children after a dispute with her husband in Aurangabad district, killing both her children although she managed to survive.

In January, a woman committed suicide with her two children in Kishanganj district after her husband married another woman. In July last year, a woman jumped into a well along with her two children in Nalanda district after a quarrel with her husband. In this case, all three died.
